Glynchbrook Campaign - Proposal for 3,500 houses at Redmarley
Staunton lies alongside the village of Corse within a Chartist settlement which was established in 1848. It is only one of 5 that was completed during the 19th century by The Chartist Land Company founded by the famous radical Feargus O’Connor. The purpose of these settlements was to encourage families to buy their cottages & smallholdings so they could support themselves and qualify for a vote, bringing reform plus attempting to improve living & working conditions. Staunton has been a Civil Parish since the passing of the Local Government Act in 1894 which allowed for the establishment of elected Parish Councils in rural areas. This resulted in the creation of Staunton Parish Council who held its first meeting on 4th December 1894……we are still meeting in the 21st century & acting as the first rung of the ladder for democracy within the parish. The meeting of elected volunteer Councillors, alongside a fully qualified Clerk exists to act as a channel of local opinion to larger local government bodies, and as such has the right to be consulted on any planning decisions affecting the parish. We hope you will use this website & also join us at our bi-monthly meetings to further the long established tradition of a Parish Council to create a supportive community.
